School Committee Pay Raise

Yesterday's paper, in case you missed it?

WORCESTER— School Committee members, riding the city charter-mandated coattails of city councilors, will nearly double their annual salaries next year, their first raises in nearly 20 years, and from now on can count on inflation-based raises every two years. Article 4, section 4 of the city’s charter calls for School Committee members, other than the mayor who also serves as school board chairman, to be compensated at a rate “equal to fifty percent of the salary established for members of the city council …” The councilors voted themselves an 84 percent raise Tuesday night, increasing their annual salaries from $15,750 to $29,000 beginning Jan. 10. The mayor’s salary was hiked 89 percent, from $18,000 to $34,000. Every two years the salaries will be adjusted to reflect the inflation rate.

The council action means that school board members’ annual salaries next year will jump from $7,875 to $14,500.

I don't have any opinion on the pay raise per se. But I think if you take that $242,036 and divy it up, you can find some interesting uses for it. Esp. since Councilor Haller said there is overwhelming support. I wonder if people would rather see whopping 86% raises or:

more foot patrols by police in Main South

more trash cleanups of Beacon Brightly

new benches at Elm Park

an open working bathroom at Elm Park

fixed potholes on Vernon Hill

more hours logges in landcourt to haul in absentee landlords with scummy properties that councilor Haller ignores.

$242,036 can do a lot in District 4. I hope voters remember this as they see the well-paid Haller shuffle around as services disintegrate.

Let me clarify one thing... I really have no problem with the City Councilors or the School Committee get raises. Although these elected officials were well aware of the compensation when they ran, these are not part-time jobs and they deserve more pay.

If the pay raise was simply a fixed percentage (3 to 5%) each year for 5 years, I would have had no problem with this.
