Job Creation??

South Worcester Industrial Park on Canterbury, Southgate, Gardner and Armory Streets has literally been on the drawing boards for at least 15, maybe even 20 years. Map to the right is a little hard to read, hit the link above if you want to see it better. To date not one job has been created from the South Worcester Industrial Park.

Grease trap issue. I know it sounds very mundane but if the current requirements (to have grease trap on every drain) are enforced, businesses will get out of business and jobs will be lost. Next time you are out in a restaurant ask the owner about it.

Woodmeister on Washington Street has moved to Holden.

Wyman Gordon parcel remains vacant.

Grease Traps: You are ridicolous. Stop scaring people that businesses will go out of business if they don't put a grease trap on their sink. They are large metal bins that don't cost all that much. For them to be emptied, especially on a place that may not gather much grease, would be emptied rarely. It was cost barely anything over the course of a couple years. Its just another regulation and expense, but it won't put someone out of business. Do we have any numbers or facts backing your argument?

I really do not know how to answer this. Go to any restaurant owner and ask him or her about the requirements and how much it will cost them.

One restaurant I was in the other day told me specifically if they had to put in the drains that are currently being asked to install that they can not afford and will in fact close.

If you do not believe me call the owner of the Webster House, Chris. I have seem him on television and he has a very good grasp of the situation and will be able to tell you how much these items will cost.

Thanks

Bill

The metal bins that you are referring can be found on grills in many kitchens and catch the overflow of grease. You are right those are inexpensive.

The grease traps on the actual drains are not inexpensive at all. In fact it can cost thousands and thousands of dollars for each one.

Well maybe we should stop grease and trans fats in Worcester. There is something to run on.

This may in fact be something to run on, but you have one problem --Worcester is not an island. A new restaurant may find it easier to simply locate outside the city limits in surrounding towns that do not have the same requirements, which also have lower property taxes.

My point of this blog was necessarily to have a disussion on grease or trans fat from restaurants, but how it will effect job in the District. You have to understant that the currrent requirement by the City of Worcester to put grease traps on all drains is unique to Worcester. It most definately is not pro-business and if enforced as written currently will cost District 4 jobs.

Again talk to the restaurant owner that next time you are out to eat and ask him or her about it, you will get an earful.

Thanks

Bill

I am a local environmentalist who prefers to stay out of this race, and away from the grease traps issue, as I don't know enoguh. However, I do want to say Barbara has been horrid with district restaurants, constantly dragging them before license commission for the slightest infractions.
